Dr. Wang earned a B.S. in Biology in 1999 from Catholic Fu-Jen University in New Taipei City, Taiwan; subsequently he received an M.S. in Medical Informatics and a Ph.D. in Structural Virology from National Yang-Ming University in Taipei in 2001 and 2008, respectively. While earning his doctorate, he served as an exchange Ph.D. student in the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition at the Karolinska Institute (2003-2005) and as a junior specialist in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California – Davis (2005-2008). After receiving his Ph.D., he briefly returned to the Karolinska Institute as a visiting scholar (2009-2010) before moving to the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry at Indiana University in Bloomington, where he completed his postdoctoral training (2010-1013) under the mentorship of Dr. Adam Zlotnick, studying the structure of hepatitis B virus (HBV). Dr. Wang subsequently served as a research assistant professor (2013-2019) and a staff scientist (2015-2019) under Dr. Roger Innes in the Electron Microscopy Center at Indiana University, where he devoted 75% of his effort to supporting the research of others through his expertise in cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM); his remaining effort during this time was devoted to continuing his work on HBV with Dr. Zlotnick. During his tenure at Indiana University, he also initiated a collaboration with Dr. Tuli Mukhopadhyay to study alphavirus structure and virion assembly. Dr. Wang was recruited from Indiana University to the Penn State College of Medicine (PSCOM) in January, 2020, accepting a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, where he has established his independent research program focusing on the structure of HBV.
